If you’re like me, you’ll have tonnes of pins saved on pinterest of farmhouse decor, and so many of them will have beautiful large signs saying things like “bakery” or “farmers market”. Here in the UK coming across signs like this in any of our high street stores is near to impossible, its just not a style that is here in our stores. Find a specialist store, and they are pricey! Here I’m going to show you how I’ve been making mine using my Silhouette Cameo, and thrifted signs.
I’ve been picking up signs from charity shops these past few months, to upcycle them, this is way cheaper than buying blanks or the wood to create them. This large one cost me £3.
I sanded away the design that was already on the sign
I painted the sign with white chalk paint
And using Pentart Antique paste in Umbra, added stained edges and patches

I created my wording on my mac and used my silhouette cameo to cut it out of vinyl. You can always create a stencil by hand, but make sure to use something that will stick to the whole sign, not just the edges, you don’t want the paint to bleed under your stencil.

I then stuck my stencil to the sign
And using my pentart antique paste rubbed the paste into the letters, some parts I layered it on thicker, to create texture. I left it to dry and removed the stencil.
I am really happy with how it turned out, surprisingly the antique  on the chalk paint actually looks like a dark wood, and gives the impression the stencil was  reversed, so white onto dark wood.
I love this sign and cannot wait to hang it in our new home. I have quite the collection of signs ready to sand, so I’m sure I’ll be sharing some more here soon!
